Martha Hall Experience
Viewing Martha Halls work of art through literature was much more impactful than I expected it to be. Sixteen years of fighting breast cancer caused Hall to grow depressed as we saw through her work. Martha Hall created her own form of literature to portray her story, experiences, feelings, and journey. Just by observing her books we notice instantly that they are different from your typical piece of literature. These books are short in page length and word count. There’s lots of images, drawings, and sketches all with lots of deep underlying meaning. Amongst her work we notice a trend of more darker colors, which personally leads us to believe she suffers from depression. Martha lived by the quote, “In order to live, live with the fear of dying”.
After spending some time viewing her work there were one specific book that stood out to me, it was her timeline book. This consisted of all little cards of different appointments, such as her the breast doctor, eye doctor, and other random cards, one which was a car dealership card. All of these cards were stitched together with thread and the time span of cards ranged from the 1990s to early 2000s. On the back of what I viewed to be at least over fifty small business type cards had little handwritten notes. These notes varied as to how she was feeling, the result of a doctor’s visit, or just simply a to-do list, or a reminder of plans. These cards proved that no matter what you’re going through, there’s still tasks to be completed to live life normally like the rest of us. Although we do have to question, what was Martha’s motive to save all these cards throughout the years? Throughout Martha’s literature, she’s able to connect to a larger society. Other people who have breast cancer might read about her journey and finally have the courage to speak up more openly about it, because they’ll begin to realize that they aren’t the only ones struggling.
