Learning Outcome 3

Learning Outcome 3

I really enjoy annotating because like Susan Gilroy says, it really is like “creating a skeleton of a reading”. I believe I am doing a good job of active, critical reading. I chose Essay #1 to look at. By looking at my annotations above from the articles for Essay One, you’ll see I made many text-to-self and text-to-world connections while also connecting together others text we’ve read. I highlight important parts and make notes to myself so when looking for…

Question for Essay #3

Question for Essay #3

Are small acts of change after sharing our stories and educating really what is takes to create social change when worrying about our climate?   We need to bring awareness and education to others and make them act on it. We can share our own experiences with them and tell them about the small habits we’ve developed to create change. We can back it up with McKibbens reasoning of statistics. We need to make sure they understand that this is…

Best formula for social change(emphasis : climate change) + NAYSAYER

Best formula for social change(emphasis : climate change) + NAYSAYER

The best formula for social change begins when we understand amongst ourselves what climate change actually is and what future damage can be done. Climate change can be a very delicate subject. Some people believe it’s real, some don’t believe it to be real, and some people believe it to be real, but they just chose to ignore it. If we ourselves aren’t educated on what climate change is and how we can help it, how can we impact others?…

Both Duhigg and McKibben have very strong beliefs that societal change can happen when create relationships with communities beyond our most immediate.  McKibben believes that to begin to develop a societal change we need to step outside our comfort zone and push our limits. He says, “Make a little noise. Be a little uncomfortable” (1). It’s the idea of pushing ourselves in addition to our peers to create a developing change or societal movement. When dealing with an issue that…

Bill McKibben

Bill McKibben is a powerful individual who believes he needs “to go against my sense of who I’m most comfortable being. It seems like it’s the thing that’s required now” (1). Bill McKibben was one of the eight individuals to begin a movement in 2008 called 350.org. This organization wanted to try and create global organization regarding what is considered the first and largest issue that our planet has ever faced. The central problem being faced is that our planet…

“And yet” – Charles Duhigg

“And yet” – Charles Duhigg

Charles Duhigg explores how strong relationships combined with more distant connections have the ability to motivate larger groups to come together to work towards one large, common goal. Duhigg believes “strong ties, or close relationships, combined with weak ties, or distant connections, have the power to mobilize large groups toward a singular goal.”  It is true that these ties are what it takes to reach a common goal. The strong ties are what connects us to the weak ties. Combining…

Charles Duhigg

Reading the article on Charles Duhigg was really eye-opening. Duhigg explores how strong relationships combined with more distant connections, have power to mobilize large groups towards one large, underlying goal. The way he refers to the connection of these relationships is through “strong and weak ties”. Duhigg uses text-to-world visuals throughout the passage to convey how these ties connect. Duhigg speaks about Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. There were many people before Rosa Parks who refused to stand…

Active, critical reading (150-250 words)

I really believe Im doing a good job of active critical reading. Managing individual error patterns (150-250 words)

Managing individual error patterns (150-250 words)

My weakest point throughout the essay was definitely comma splices. I didn’t even fully understand or realize what a comma splice is. I now understand that comma splice separate an independent clause from a dependent clause. After bringing this concern up to my writing tutor i learned that after the comma you need to add a word such as, (and, but, so) and if that doesn’t work, then simply end your sentence with a period. These errors did not improve…
